Nåusm Salish Language Revitalization Institute is located just north of the town of Arlee in the Flathead Reservation. The reservation is the homeland to the nation of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. This nation is comprised of the Bitterroot Salish, the Upper Pend d’Oreille and the Kootenai tribes. The Flathead Reservation of 1.317 million acres is situated in northwest Montana. Our ancestors inhabited the territory now known as Western and Central Montana, parts of Northern Idaho, Southern British Columbia and Northwest Wyoming. This aboriginal territory exceeded 20 million acres at the time of the 1855 Hellgate Treaty. The treaty ceded much of this territory and reserved the area now know as the Flathead Reservation for a homeland. Through unilateral legislation of the US Government much of the Flathead Reservation was sold as surplus land. Today through the efforts of the CS&KT government more than 60% of the total land is back in the possesion of the Tribes' and its citizens.
